Hi Tony,
Thermal imaging is used by helicopters but the cameras can be used for lots of other things than catching toerags!
They are used by electricians and building surveyors, plumbers etc to easily find temperature differences. They can be used for looking at a fuse board and instantly seeing if there are any loose connections or excessive heat within the fuse box.
Surveyors can use them to look for heat loss in a building and the areas where heat is escaping will show up as cold patches.
Plumbers can use them for tracing heating pipes or even cold pipes within walls and floors etc
They have a million uses ! Vets even use them to spot hot spots in animals !
The thermal imaging cameras used to be upwards of £20,000 but they have come down in price to approx £3k and are also the size of a camcorder. The major players are Flir systems http://www.pat-services.co.uk/thermal-imaging-cameras-71.html
There are still more expensive cameras around for the serious surveyor.
Some companies are charging £500 a day for the service of carrying out a survey.
Hope this helps.
